This gift bag is small, but the nice thing about making gift bags with fabric is that they can be made any size.
And what goes in the bags can be all sizes and shapes. In fact, fabric gift bags are perfect for wrapping gifts that are difficult to wrap.
The stitching can be done by hand or by machine, and all it involves is straight seams to close the sides and bottom.
The top of the bag can be finished with pinking shears so it doesn’t need to be sewn. Or you can sew a casing and put a drawstring in.
Materials.
Fabric
Sewing Machine or Needle and Thread
Pinking Shears
Ribbon or Twine
How to Make an Easy Reusable Fabric Gift Bag.
1. Decide how big you want your gift bag to be. You will need double that amount of fabric.
2. Fold the fabric in half.
Use the fold of the fabric for one side of the bag.
3. With right sides together stitch down the open side and across the bottom. Backstitch at each end.
4. Turn the bag right side out and lay flat, lining up the top edges.
5. Use pinking shears (or zigzag scissors) to cut evenly across the top to keep the edge from fraying.
To use a fabric gift bag, place your gift in the bag and gather it a couple of inches down from the top.
Tie a ribbon around where you’ve gathered it, and make a bow.
Tips.
You can make any size you need.
Other materials you can use to make the bag are sheets, tablecloths, or even an opaque shower curtain.
Also look in the thrift store for garments or fabrics that will work.
For a child you could tie the bag shut with a jump rope.
You can put the fold of the bag on the bottom if it will make a better shape for your gift. Then just stitch up the sides.
