Make folded tags from Christmas cards to recycle your saved stash of cards.
Or buy boxes of deeply discounted cards just before or after Christmas.
Usually when you see recycled Christmas card tags, they are flat and pinked around the edges, then layered with 2 or 3 other paper shapes.
Here is an easy way to make elegant folded tags from Christmas cards, or other greeting cards.
Think of 2 or 3 sizes of tags that you might like to have.
Using the plastic clamshell wrapping that many products come in, make a few templates that you can see through.
This will allow you to experiment with different sizes and shapes of tags until you find some you like.
The first template I used is 1 i/4 inches x 2 1/2 inches. As the photo shows, you can turn it either way and have the fold on the left of the tag, or at the top. The dashed line shows where the tag fold line is.
It makes a small square tag after folding.
The second template is 2 inches x 2 1/4 inches, and you can turn it in either direction to use, so it is 2 1/4 inches tall or 2 1/4 inches wide.
Because you can see through these templates, you can see whether they fit the picture you want to use.
And the dashed line helps you see exactly what will be on the front of the tag after it is folded and finished.
You can make templates (and tags) any size you want to use.
Often you can make more than one tag from a Christmas card. I was able to get 4 tags from one of these Christmas cards, and 3 tags from another.
Make Folded Tags from Christmas Cards 1
This first card had a picture that covered only a small part of the card,
and I was only able to get 2 tags from it.
These tags are folded at the top and are wide.
Make Folded Tags from Christmas Cards 2
This card doesn’t have a large picture, and the small images are spaced far enough apart to allow for several tags.
Even the white embossed house could be made into a tag.
I cut this card
to make one tall tag, and 2 small square ones.
The snowman is a little hard to see in the photo, but I thought he was really cute!
Make Folded Tags from Christmas Cards 3
There were lots of ways to use the images on this card.
This image was one I chose.
And here are the 4 finished tags from this card.
Fold The Tags to Finish
After you finish cutting out the tags, score them across the middle to help you fold them neatly and easily.
The folded tags from Christmas cards are ready to attach to your gifts.
Tips
Remember to check what the inside of the tag will look like by looking at the opposite side of the area you want to cut out. Sometimes it has writing or printing, so you can’t use it.
Usually the fold will be on the top of the tag or on the left edge.
